Is Your Baby Ready for Solid Foods?

This is so exciting that you are thinking about starting your baby on their first foods. Food can be used as a fundamental way to teach these tiny creatures. Starting this journey of solid food is just like reading to them or playing with colorful toys. The receptors in their brains are hard at work. Babies learn through touch and taste. Which is why they put everything in their mouth. They are learning, not just drooling on everything. In the case of starting solid foods, it allows them to learn through the texture of a certain food followed by the amazing blast of flavor. Watching them experience something as simple as a banana for the first time will make you not only laugh, but will help them be smarter babies.

4 Signs Your Baby Might Be Ready For Solid Foods

  1. Your baby can sit and hold their head up unassisted.
  2. They are interested in your food and try to grab for it.
  3. Your baby can grasp.
  4. They can sign food or water.

Typically, babies are ready to start solid foods around the 4-6 month mark. But it’s always good to consult your doctor before embarking on the solid food journey.

When you first start out giving them solid foods they really don’t even eat that much. This first stage is all about the learning, the tasting, the laughing at the funny faces they will give you. Don’t stress! They will eventually get a taste of that sweet banana and will eat it.

I love to take a banana and mash it up with a fork and let your baby try to pick it up. Sure it mostly moves around on their tray from one side to the other, but they are using their fine motor skills. This type of playing stimulates their tiny brain. So, let them do that for 10 minutes. It’s like a game for them. And before you know it, they’ll be groaning, pointing, or signing for “more” of that yummy banana.

Great job! You’re on the path to solid foods.
